The monastery of St Katharinental, situated on the left bank of the Rhine between Diessenhofen and Schaffhausen, was founded in the 13th century by Dominican nuns. Between 1715 and 1718 Franz Beer, the master builder from the Vorarlberg region, built the convent complex, which still exists today. His son, Johann Michael Beer, built the church in the magnificent baroque style between 1732 and 1735. In 1869 the Canton of Thurgau took over the monastery as an old people's home and nursing home, which today is home to a clinic specialising in rehabilitation and longterm care. Between 1735 and 1736 Johann Jakob Bommer, the organ builder from Thurgau, constructed an organ of 19 stops in the richly decorated baroque case on the west gallery, with Great, Rückpositiv and Pedal divisions. Given that he had spent a long period of training in Kuttenberg (Kutna Hora) in what was then Bohemia, the instrument shows important features of Bohemian organ building. In the course of restoration work carried out between 1965 and 1969 by the Kuhn Organ Building Company, Männedorf, the instrument was returned to its original condition. This film gives a portrait of this magnificent instrument. Sein Sohn Johann Michael Beer errichtete 1732-1735 die Kirche in prachtvollem spätbarocken Stil. Im 1869 aufgehobenen Kloster richtete der Kanton Thurgau ein Alters- und Pflegeheim ein, das heute eine Klinik mit Schwerpunkt Rehabilitation und Langzeitpflege beherbergt. Der Thurgauer Orgelbauer Johann Jakob Bommer erbaute in den Jahren 1735-1736 auf der Westempore im reich verzierten Barockgehäuse eine Orgel mit 19 Registern, verteilt auf Hauptwerk, Rückpositiv und Pedal. Da er eine längere Ausbildungszeit im damals böhmischen Kuttenberg (Kutná Hora) verbracht hatte, weist das Instrument deutliche Züge des böhmischen Barockorgelbaus auf. Im Rahmen einer Restaurierung durch Orgelbau Kuhn AG, Männedorf, in den Jahren 1965-69 wurde das Instrument auf den ursprünglichen Zustand zurückgeführt. Der vorliegende Film zeichnet ein Porträt dieses Instruments. Visuelle Impressionen von der Bommer-Orgel und vom Kirchenraum verschmelzen mit den von Matthias Blumer eingespielten Orgelwerken — ergänzt durch entsprechende Kommentare zu Musik, Instrument und zur Kirche — zu einem sinnlichen und dabei informativen Genuss.
