'Our long-awaited little soldiers who were full of love, happiness, fun and cheek': Parents' heartbreaking tribute to two-year- old twins who drowned in a fish tank.
The bereft parents of twin two-year-old boys who drowned in a giant fish tank at their home have spoken of the devastating loss of their 'long awaited little soldiers'.
Sarah Aitken, 32, and Mervyn Scott, 30, described their sons Shaun and Rhys as being 'full of love, happiness, fun and cheek', adding that they will be 'forever missed and loved'.
The twins died after apparently falling into the tank while their 'parents thought they were playing inside'. They were described as 'miracle babies'.
Emergency services were called to Dalgety Bay, Fife, after the children were discovered in the deep fish pond at the side of their detached home. They were taken to Kirkcaldy's Victoria Hospital, where they were pronounced dead.
'We along with our family and friends are still in shock and devastated at such a tragic loss from such a freak accident.
'They have been taken from us far too early and will be forever missed and loved. We wish to be left alone and be given the privacy needed to grieve.'
A Police Scotland spokesman said: 'We received a call around 8.20am on Saturday, March 12, following a report of concern for two children at an address in Dalgety Bay, Fife.
'Two male twins, aged two years old, had reportedly drowned in a fish pond and officers attended with the Scottish Ambulance Service.
The incident happened in Breakers Way, on the southwest of the town, which sits on the north shore of the Firth of Forth and overlooks the iconic rail and road bridges.
In 2012, an application was made to Fife Council to install a £25,000 koi fish tank and enclosure at the side of the property. The tank is split into two walk-in and low-level enclosures.
A neighbour in a nearby street said: 'I am a mother myself and I'm just shocked at what's happened.
'It's a nice street. Something like this will just devastate the community.
'I heard the sirens around 8.30am and knew it was pretty close.'
Another neighbour said: 'It's such a terrible tragedy. I used to see their mum pushing them along the street in their buggy. They were such happy little boys. No one can quite believe this has happened.'
Police are still stood outside the detached, two-storey property, where two cars sat in the driveway.
A cordon covered the house as well as two others at the bottom of the cul-de-sac while neighbouring residents remained indoors behind closed curtains.
