Welcome to the third edition of our brand-new (current) e-TV magazine at electronica 2012. Today, we'd like to focus on automotive and electromobility. The car of the future is becoming ever more intelligent, but so is the infrastructure, too. Traffic management and traffic control systems are having to become more intelligent and, increasingly, communicate with each other. For electromobility, the semiconductor industry is looking for ways to increase the range of e-cars. They are developing new battery charging systems and solutions for a charging infrastructure. What we are seeing at electronica is unmistakable: The automotive and e-mobility sectors are merging with each other.
For car to X-communication one thing is above all essential: common standards across the board that all manufacturers conform to. A couple of days ago leading companies from the automotive sector, the semiconductor sector, and Science agreed on a uniform standard. The so-called "CAR 2 CAR communication consortium" wants to make the first networked systems available on the market by 2015. Thus, in the foreseeable future, the car will become the control center (primary control unit). Communication between vehicles from a wide variety of manufacturers with each other, and between vehicles and traffic management systems, should increase the efficiency of road traffic, make driving safer, and reduce consumption.
With the digitalization of the car, the automotive sector is becoming increasingly important for the electronics industry. We are here at the stand of Texas Instruments. Mr Schambacher, how important is the topic of automotive for TI and the industry as a whole?
This controller is not only for playing games (gaming) with your X-Box. It contains electronic components of Freescale that allow it to communicate.
On the stand, it is just a gimmick, yet the future of human-to-vehicle communication is being decisively shaped by the developments in the semiconductor industry.

But more communication can also lead to more distraction. Kyocera has developed a new touchpad technology for the driver, so you don't have to take your eyes off the street.

The driver also gets haptic feedback from AB Elektronik' gas pedal. The pedal warns against potentially dangerous situations on the road by emitting a signal; for example, if the driver goes too fast.
New solutions for the car-to-X networking concepts must, in the end, come together and indeed in the car itself. This is true for both conventional and electric vehicles. And just what an integrated car looks like can be seen in a world premiere at electronica 2012: the Concept Car ebee from Visteon.
So mabye that's what the car of the future looks like. But how do we fill ("charge") it up with "gas"? Where does the electricity come from, and how does it get into the vehicle? The electronics industry has several answers to these questions.
Charging with the power of the sun is one option. The Solar Car, which, in twenty thirteen, will have to conquer (cover) three thousand kilometres in Australia in the World Solar Challenge, also needs the best components. Renesas provides not only the controllers for EnergyHarvesting or battery management, but is also sponsoring participation in the competition.
To avoid confusion in the charging of electric vehicles, Phoenix Contact has developed the so-called "combined AC/DC charging system". It supports charging with both DC and AC.
Charging operations are a field in which the Kostal group, a global independent family company from Lüdenscheid, is also a specialist. Kostal produces systems that allow both conductive and inductive charging and is as consumer-friendly as possible. But not only that:
