The California Dogface (Zerene eurydice, also known as the "Dog's Head Butterly") is California's state butterfly (and state insect, as designated in 1972). Its life cycle is showcased here in great detail, featuring time lapse sequences of never before seen events in the growth and development of this amazing creature. These butterflies are not very well known, and not commonly found in cities and gardens, however, they can be found in many Southern California mountain ranges where the caterpillar host plant "False Indigo" (Amorpha californica) grows. The adult butterflies typically fly in June and July, but can occasionaly be seen as early as March during spring warm spells at lower elevations in its range. Enjoy the show!
