The Amalfi Coast Italy has been called the most beautiful coastline in the world and after visiting it I would agree. Located south of Naples Italy, a visit to Amalfi is often combined with a tour of Pompeii and Capri. I visited Amalfi while on a Mediterranean Cruise aboard Royal Caribbean's Serenade of the Seas. The Serenade was recently revitalized with many upgrades and enhancements including a light show in the atrium used for performances throughout the cruise. Our port of call was actually Salerno Italy which is a scenic port about 16 miles south of Amalfi. We chose to take a boat tour that follows the coastline to Amalfi that included an afternoon tour of Pompeii. This turned out to be a very wise choice because it allowed us to get some of the best views of the coastal villages from the water and we avoided the famous/infamous Amalfi highway that isn't for the faint of heart. Amalfi will forever be associated with the Knights Templer which was formed in the hills above Amalfi in the 1,100's. This ancient, and at one time almost unknown fishing village may have once been a repository for the Ark Of The Covenant/Holy Grail and other artifacts before they made their way to the Island of Malta. Our Serenade Of The Seas Mediterranean cruise visited many amazing ports of call but it seemed they saved one of the best stops for last before returning to Barcelona. Our visit to Amalfi was definitely one of the high points of our Mediterranean cruise and is a must see if your cruise includes a stop in the Naples area.
