Each faction has two colors, one that represents the territory gained in that particular day, and the other representing territory that faction currently controls.
In Syria:
Red = Areas controlled by the Syrian government and its allies (Hezbollah, Baath brigades, PFLP-GC, National Defense Force, SSNP, etc)
Green = Areas controlled by Syrian rebel groups (Free Syrian Army, Jabhat Al-Nusra, Islamic Front, etc...)
Peach = Areas controlled by Syrian Kurdish YPG forces and its allies (Free Syrian Army-banner groups, tribal forces, PKK, etc...)
Black = Areas controlled by the Islamic State and its proxies (Liwa Shuhadah Yarmouk, Jaish Al-Jihad, etc...)
Blue = Israeli Occupied Golan Heights
In Iraq:
Purple = Areas controlled by the Iraqi government and its allies (Shiite militias, tribal forces, etc...)
Yellow = Areas controlled by the Iraqi Kurdistan forces and its allies (YPG, PKK, etc...)
Black = Areas controlled by the Islamic State
Golan Heights appears late in the video. It was a mapping error. Basically I had already done 2 years worth of mapping and then realized that I had forgotten to include the Golan Heights occupied by Israel. In reality, the Golan Heights has been occupied since 1967 after the Six-Day War.
