German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier rejected the idea of closing Europe's internal borders as a solution to the refugee crisis, during a press conference in Berlin on Tuesday. "Closing the borders will not be a solution to the problem," he said, referring to the suspension of the Schengen Agreement by Austria.
SOT, Frank-Walter Steimeier, German Foreign Minister (German): "Under this extreme pressure, closing the borders will not be a solution to the problem. With regards to Austria, to be honest I am not sure where it is going to lead. Austria is preparing internally at the moment for a crisis-summit among the coalition parties."
SOT, Frank-Walter Steimeier, German Foreign Minister (German): "We are not satisfied with the measures [in tackling the refugee crisis] on a European level. And I mean not only the fair distribution [of refugees], but we are left behind in establishing so-called hot-spots. The responsible commissioner, Avramopoulos, if you saw already in the news, he announced this morning - we cannot check if its stands in reality - that the hot-spots in Greece and Italy should be ready and built up within the next four weeks. I am not sure what the basis is for this announcement."
SOT, Frank-Walter Steimeier, German Foreign Minister (German): "I have said that, with regards to our - or the Western - position towards Iran: when you lose trust, then a contract cannot contribute to replacing the lost trust, it has to be built up. This applies also to our position vis-a-vis Iran and Saudi Arabia. In principle I think it is possible. I think it is possible to have relations with Saudi Arabia that are not always determined by rivalry and supremacy in the Middle East. I think it is possible for trust to grow on both sides, in working towards a political solution in Syria. And what I say for Saudi Arabia and Syria applies also to the stance of Germany towards Iran. Of course we are now writing a new chapter in the 'German-Iran relations book,' a new chapter. It lies in our hands what those pages are filled with."
