Etiology (Causes)
Stomach ulcers, or peptic ulcers, are erosions or sores in the stomach lining. These ulcers are caused by an imbalance between the digestive fluids in the stomach and the protective factors that maintain the integrity of the gastric mucosa.
The most common causes include:
1. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs): Chronic use of NSAIDs like ibuprofen and aspirin can reduce the stomach's protective mucus lining.
2. Excess stomach acid: Can be caused by hypersecretion, stress, smoking, and spicy foods.
3. Smoking and alcohol: Both contribute to mucosal damage and delay healing.
4. Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome: A condition where one or more tumors in the pancreas or duodenum cause increased production of stomach acid.
