I can't even remember when I lost a point."
There was a reason for the interest of NC Dinos coach Kang In-kwon. Seo Eui-tae's confidence was sky high.
Seo Eui-tae, who has been wearing NC uniforms since the 2022 season after passing through the Kiwoom Heroes after being nominated by the KT Wiz as the 21st overall in the second third round in 2016, is a left-hander with a confident physique of 196 centimeters and 120 kilograms.
Seo Eui-tae's strength is the heavy ball power emanating from a large body by far. However, he has only made one appearance in the first team game so far this season. His performance was also not good, with one hit, three outs, one strikeout and four runs in 0.2 innings.
Seo Eui-tae had a meaningful year this season. Playing in 46 games (39.1 innings) in the Futures League, he stood out as a bullpen pitcher with one win, two losses and eight-hold ERA of 4.81. In particular, in the last 10 games, he showed a salty play that did not yield a single point.
Seo Eui-tae, who has grown rapidly, also received the impression of coach Kang In-kwon in NC's CAMP 1 (finishing training), which was recently completed. Manager Kang said, "I'm looking at left-handed pitchers," adding, "Park Joo-hyun and Seo Eui-tae also showed better performances compared to the beginning of the season."
Seo Eui-tae, who met with a reporter during CAMP 1, said, "My personal goal (this season) was to step on the mound of the first team unconditionally, but unfortunately I couldn't achieve it," but it was a meaningful year. The number of innings and games was the highest in the second division. (2019) I played a full-time season for the first time since I hurt my shoulder. I was able to figure out for myself that there was no problem with my physical condition. "As I go to the game a lot, I have a lot of confidence in dealing with batters and running the game," he said confidently.
"This year, I threw a two-seam fastball instead of a four-seam fastball for the first time," he said. At the beginning of the season, I had a hard time controlling it, but after control, I can't remember when I lost the point. "I've gained a lot of confidence because there are many missed hits," he said with a big smile.
NC suffered from a series of injuries by starting pitchers in the middle of this year. However, this period was an opportunity for Seo Eui-tae to improve his skills paradoxically.
Seo Eui-tae said, "In the middle of the season, there were many injured starting pitchers such as (Lee) Jae-hak in the first division. As there were no seats available, many second-tier pitchers went up to the first division. At that time, I felt a lot as I went out a lot of games and took multiple innings. I have gained a lot of know-how and confidence," he explained.
As I said earlier, he has stepped on the first-team mound once. He took the mound in the bottom of the eighth inning against the Doosan Bears in Jamsil on September 25, 2018, when he was wearing a Heroes uniform. At that time, Seo Eui-tae struck out Heo Kyung-min and Choi Joo-hwan, respectively, and grounded out to second base, but he was shaken by allowing four runs.
Looking back at this time, he said, "Doosan was close to winning the regular league. Jamsil Baseball Stadium was full of Doosan fans, and Jung Soo-bin was the first batter. He gave up a walk due to his shaky ball control. Jung Soo-bin went out as a first base runner, and I felt my legs shaking because I was nervous. "I thought I wouldn't be nervous, but I was so nervous that I felt nervous," he said. "I was confident right after throwing it, but the second opportunity didn't come. If I go up now, I'll show a much better pitch. I'm confident," he stressed.
Coach Lee Yong-hoon helped Seo grow up. He said, "Other coaches have helped me a lot, but coach Lee Yong-hoon has helped me a lot from my routine to my pitching movement. I don't think it's an exaggeration to say that coach Lee Yong-hoon made it for me, he said. "I think it's the coach's job to create an environment where the players can do it on their own, not coach." Rather than instructing one by one, it is a style that allows preparatory movements and plays to come out naturally. That part was so good for me," he said, expressing his gratitude.
Right-hander Lee Jun-ho, who is close to Seo Eui-tae, had a meaningful time this year. He mainly played in the Futures League, but whenever there was a gap in the first-team pitching staff, he played as an alternative starter and pursuit group. His first-team record this season was 3 wins, 2 losses and a 4.83 ERA in 17 games (31.2 innings).
In particular, Lee Joon-ho showed good pitching in the postseason, although it was only one game. Lee Joon-ho, who took the mound in the top of the fourth inning when NC was trailing 0-8 in Game 4 of the playoffs against KT Wiz, blocked 1.1 innings with four strikeouts and no runs. This is a great motivation for Seo Eui-tae.
Seo Eui-tae said, "(Lee) Jun-ho was so cool. It was an opportunity to wonder if I could throw like that if I went on the mound in that situation. The rookie pitcher threw so bravely. I don't think I was that good when I was young, but it was so cool. "If I get a chance next time, I'd like to bravely throw it," he said.
But he's more of a bullpen than a starter. Seo Eui-tae said, "I always go all out every time I throw. I think the middle or closing pitcher will be the position I can do, he said. "I think I'm specialized in that area."
He then said, "In CAMP 1 last year, there were blue-and-white matches or practice games, but this year, there were no games as the season ended late. "There is no part that can appeal," he said, adding, "I was able to appeal to the coach and first-team coaches that they were better than last year, but this part is a little disappointing."
However, contrary to Seo's words, NC already knew Seo's growth. He is currently participating in a driving line camp in Tokyo, Japan, with the help of the club, Shin Young-woo and Lee Yong-joon. Seo Eui-tae's goal for the 2024 season, which is receiving so much attention, is to establish himself as a bullpen pitcher in the first division.
"I was confident myself against the left-handed hitter this year. I want to make such an image in the first division as well. I want to be a pitcher who can delete one inning." It was Seo Eui-tae's strong ambition.
