Spanish police raided the headquarters of the Spanish Football Association and the home of former association president Luis Rubiales on corruption charges.
"Spanish police have launched raids on the headquarters of the Spanish Football Association in Madrid and the home of former association president Rubiales in Granada," Reuters reported.
"The Spanish Football Association has arrested seven people in its investigation into corruption allegations over a contract to relocate the venue for the Super Cup to Saudi Arabia," it added.
The Spanish Football Association signed a three-year contract worth 120 million euros (about 174.4 billion won) with Saudi authorities to host the 2019 Super Cup in Saudi Arabia.
As a result, the Spanish Football Association expanded the Super Cup, which has traditionally been held as a showdown between the winner of the Primera Liga and the winner of the Copa del Rey, a regular professional football league, to four teams from the 2020 tournament, and changed the hosting period from August to January.
Spain's Super Cup was first held in Saudi Jeddah in January 2020, and again in Spain in 2021 before being held in Saudi Riyadh for the third consecutive year from 2022 until January this year.
Spanish prosecutors described it as "an investigation related to business corruption, inappropriate asset management, and money laundering."
During the raid on the headquarters of the Spanish Football Association, employees were blocked from entering the building, and the Spanish national team was trained at a nearby training ground ahead of the A-match in March. https://www.outlookindia.com/outlook-spotlight/2023%EB%85%84-11%EC%9B%94-%EC%8A%A4%ED%8F%AC%EC%B8%A0-%ED%86%A0%ED%86%A0%EC%82%AC%EC%9D%B4%ED%8A%B8-%EC%88%9C%EC%9C%84-%EB%B0%8F-%EC%B6%94%EC%B2%9C-%EC%82%AC%EC%84%A4%ED%86%A0%ED%86%A0-%EB%A8%B9%ED%8A%80%EA%B2%80%EC%A6%9D-top15-news-328577
