3% chance of winning
"I think the 2nd round will go to the 5th set"
This is what Hyundai Engineering & Construction coach Kang Sung-hyung said after winning a dramatic come-from-behind victory over Heungkuk Life Insurance in the first round of the 2023-2024 V-League women's championship match held at Suwon Gymnasium on the 28th. It was a joke, but it was aimed at the much more severe physical burden of Heungkuk Life Insurance, which had played three playoff games with Jeonggwanjang.
Heungkuk Life Insurance, which showed a remarkable decrease in physical strength after the third set in the first match, also showed a noticeable decrease in physical strength after the fourth set in the second match of the championship held at Suwon Gymnasium on the 30th. Heungkuk Life Insurance, which led the set score 2-1 until the third set, allowed consecutive points in only one place in the fourth set, giving it 17-25.
The fifth set, which was met with a set score of 2-2. It was a new set, starting from 0-0, but it was inevitable that it was influenced by the previous set. Hyundai E&C players, who had risen to the point of excitement, overwhelmed Heungkuk Life with a hint of exhaustion. Hyundai E&C, who had been leading by one or two points from the beginning of the set, took the victory by widening the gap to 11-8 with MOMA's open attack from 10-8.
Since then, Hyundai Engineering & Construction, which continued its lead stably, allowed pursuit to 12-11, but Hyundai Engineering & Construction did not have only MOMA as the troubleshooter. Yang Hyo-jin's open attack widened it to 13-11, taking a breather. As Raina's quick opening was put back into the court of Hyundai Engineering & Construction, Heungkuk Life followed with 13-12, but this time, after Wipawi kicked Kim Yeon-koung's attack, MOMA succeeded in a back attack in an open situation and reached the 14-12 match point first. Heungkuk Life also followed with Kim Yeon-koung's quick opening, 14-13, but the ensuing rally also ended with Hyundai Engineering & Construction's set score of 3-2 (23-25 25-21 21-25 25-17 15-13) as MOMA's back attack flew toward the stands after hitting the opponent's blocker.
After sweeping all of the first and second rounds, Hyundai Engineering & Construction had an 83.3 percent chance of winning the championship. Prior to the women's championship, six teams had won the first and second rounds, with five winning the championship. The last time the team failed to win the championship was Heungkuk Life Insurance, which suffered a reverse sweep by the Korea Expressway Corporation last season
MOMA, who scored 37 points, the most in both teams, while accounting for 51.53 percent of the team's attacks in the first round, hit 38.71% of the team's attacks and drove in 34 points. The attack success rate reached 55%, so if the ball went up to MOMA, the score would be scored. While Yang Hyo-jin added 19 points, including six blocks, outside heater Jung Ji-yoon, who only scored eight points in the first round, played an active role with an attack success rate of 53.85 percent on the day. It was the result of meeting coach Kang's expectations that outside heaters should have some offensive productivity before the start of the championship match. Wipawi (Thailand) also scored 12 points, diversifying Hyundai Engineering & Construction's offensive routes.
Heungkuk Life Insurance's triangle formation of Kim Yeon-kyung (28 points), Willow (25 points), and Raina (22 points) all exceeded 20 points in the second game following the first round, but failed to overcome the last crisis and was defeated.
After the match, Hyundai Engineering & Construction coach Kang Sung-hyung said, "My joke that we would go to the fifth set in the second round also became a reality. I hope we get it right in the end," adding, "I am encouraged not only by MOMA but also by other players to score points and win. The driving force behind this was that I was able to win by grabbing four or five sets even after losing two sets."
He also made it clear that he would finish the championship game in the third round. "Heungkuk Life Insurance is good in height and has strength in attack, so I think he will push back hard in the early part of the third round. If he persevere in that part, he will be able to win the third round as well," Kang said.
"When I was leading like in the first round, I couldn't make a decision. I think the issue is the players' mental health, not their physical strength. At the moment I had to make a decision, I had to be strong and bold, but that was not the case," Avon Danza coach Marcello said.
Coach Avon Dan-ja, who used only Do Soo-bin for the Libero throughout this postseason, eventually put in Kim Hae-ran as Do Soo-bin's receiving, which had been shaking since the first set, remained in the early third set. Kim Hae-ran lost, but showed his class by catching 41.18% of receiving efficiency and 10 digs. Regarding Kim Hae-ran's use of Game 3, he replied, "I think we need to check whether Kim Hae-ran can play two consecutive games in terms of physical strength or this."
Now, the team is on the brink of collapse. Only by overcoming the third game will it be able to return the reverse sweep to Hyundai Engineering & Construction, which Heungkuk Life Insurance suffered last season. "We don't have much time to prepare, so we are making plans every single day of the week. We look forward to the enthusiastic cheering of the Incheon home fans," Avon Dan-ja said. https://www.gwolf.info/
