This is what Hanwha Eagles' Ryu Hyun-jin (37) said while looking at Lee Jae-won (36) wearing a catcher's mask.
In 2005, Ryu Hyun-jin, a pitcher at Dongsan High School, and Lee Jae-won, a catcher at Incheon High School, matched well with batteries while playing for the national youth team. Then, they both joined pro teams in 2006. They were meant to be mean. Both players were first candidates for nomination at the Incheon base. At the time, the SK Wyverns (currently SSG Landers) nominated Lee Jae-won instead of Ryu, and Ryu ended up wearing the Hanwha uniform.
SK named Lee Jae-won first because it wanted a player to succeed Park Kyung-wan, the best catcher of the time.
Since then, the two players have been on a roll. Lee Jae-won earned the nickname "winning catcher" by winning several championships during his time with the SK Wyverns. Although Ryu never won a championship, he has established himself as the best pitcher in Korea.
The two players, who have grown up in their respective positions, will meet in 2024. Lee asked SSG to release him after the end of last season, and he has started a new life with Hanwha. He signed a contract with an annual salary of 50 million won.
Ryu's return was dramatic. He failed to sign a contract with the Major League club until the end of January, and changed his mind with the Hanwha Eagles, who continued to keep in touch with him. He signed an eight-year contract worth 17 billion won (including opt-outs) on the 22nd. He returned to the Hanwha Eagles in 12 years.
Hanwha was scheduled to hold a practice game against Samsung on the 26th. It wasn't a group game, but Ryu Hyun-jin was accompanied by the team. It was for bullpen pitching. He was forced to come to the away bullpen because he needed to repair the mound.
Appearing at the bullpen session, Ryu expressed his welcome to Lee Jae-won, saying, "It's been 19 years." Lee also smiled.
Ryu played a total of 60 pitches, 20 each, on three occasions. He checked all pitches including fastballs, sliders, curves, cutters and changeups.
General manager Sohn Hyuk and commentator Yang Sang-moon asked Lee Jae-won a question. They asked him what kind of pitch he was and how he felt. "There is no error. The ball comes in a good way for the catcher to catch it. This is like his heyday," Lee Jae-won told commentator Yang.
When Ryu Hyun-jin asked for the cause of death, Lee Jae-won also talked, saying, "I'll match you as you want."
After finishing the last 20 pitches, Lee Jae-won smiled, saying, "The more I threw, the faster my speed became. I don't think I have to worry."
Lee Jae-won told reporters after the training, "I think I only had a sore throat from shouting 'Nice Ball,'" adding, "I think Ryu Hyun-jin will know better about his physical condition, but I think he will be able to play in the opening game. He seems to be preparing well."
"I threw all five to six pitches, and both the location and the control were perfect," he said, adding, "If I increase the number of pitches and my physical strength is supported, I think I will be able to take the mound (in the opening game)."
It was his first battery performance in 19 years. "Actually, I don't remember receiving the ball properly. Regardless of his friend, Hyun-jin is a perfect pitcher. I feel really good as a catcher as well," Lee said smiling.
"I throw whatever I ask. I don't think there are any other pitchers like this in Korea or the U.S. (Kim) Kwang-hyun, I've received all the credit from good mercenaries, and Hyun-jin is as good as me," he said.
What is the difference compared to Kim Kwang-hyun? Lee Jae-won explained, "If Kwang-hyun comes in sharply, Hyun-jin feels like kicking in."
Lee Jae-won expressed his determination, saying, "I will work well with Hyun-jin, foreigners, (Moon) Dong-ju, and (Hwang) Jun-seo so that the team can win." https://www.totositesafe.com/
