Английские прилагательные и наречия могут иметь степени сравнения, а могут и не иметь.

Первые называются gradable (градуальные), вторые – ungradable (неградуальные). Части речи со степенями сравнения могут выражать качество в сильной и слабой степени благодаря использованию наречий: rather, quite, a bit, a little:
I thought he was rather nice.
He's quite rich, but not a millionaire.
