Adding the Nanos separately allows you to place them on the cuff where you choose, piecing it together like a puzzle. The challenge with a focal point like this is the shape: It isn’t completely flat, so you have to stay on the outside of the cabochon while stitching the first round of beads. My color choices reflect my chosen glass. Choose your colors the same way.
Supplies
• 25mm round glass cabochon (Tammy Rae Wolter)
• 6 Nano beads, crystal bronze
• 24 6mm crystal pearls, purple haze
• 100 4mm round Fiesta beads, light plum
• 100 3mm crystal pearls, antique gold • 100 3mm drop beads, khaki
• 25 9x8mm mushroom buttons, burnt orange
• 50 6x4mm drops, turquoise
• 50 5x7mm drops, lime green
• 300 O-Ring beads, Iris purple
• 3g 110 cylinder beads, heather matte
• 8g 110 seed beads, frosted carnival
• 3g 150 seed beads, gold
• Three-hole slide bar clasp, antique brass
• 8x2½" (20x6.4cm) piece of beading foundation, jet black
• 8x2" (20x5cm) piece of suede, black
• 6 ½x½" (1.3x1.3cm) pieces of suede, black
• Size 11 or 12 beading needle
• Fireline, 6-lb. test, smoke (or similar thread)
• E-6000 adhesive
• White tacky glue
• Toothpick
• Small, sharp scissors
• Bottle and rubber band
Make the Cuff
1. Make a copy of the provided template (see p. 126). Wrap the marked cuff around your wrist to determine your desired size, and subtract 1" (2.5cm) in between the ends for your clasp. Trace this onto your beading foundation. Cut out the pattern.
2. Using E-6000, glue the glass cabochon to the center of the beading foundation and allow to dry (1).
3. Single-thread your needle with 24" (61cm) of thread, and tie an overhand knot. Pass the needle up beside the glass cabochon (be sure you are beside it and not under it). Backstitch a row of 6mm crystal pearls around the cabochon (2).
4. Bring your needle up in between two of the 6mm pearls. Pick up a 3mm drop bead, and pass back down into the space you just exited so the drop sits on top of the space between the 6mm pearls (3 and 4). Repeat the entire way around, filling in between the 6mm pearls. Don’t pull too tightly—the drops should sit on top of the 6mm pearls (5).
5. Glue a Nano bead to each ½" (1.3cm) piece of the suede. Don’t glue in the hole—use a toothpick, and glue the bottom so the widest part is at the top.
6. Single-thread your needle with 12" (30cm) of thread, and tie an overhand knot. Pass the needle up through the hole of a Nano bead and stitch on a 4mm Fiesta bead. Repeat the thread path for strength.
7. Bring the needle up beside the Nano. Backstitch a row of 110 cylinder beads around the Nano, keeping an even count. This should work out to be 20 cylinders in your base row (6).
8. Work peyote stitch in the round for two additional rows with the cylinders.
9. Work the next row with 110 seed beads (7).
10. Work the final row with 3mm crystal pearls. They will fan out from the Nano for a flowery effect. Weave the needle to the underside of the suede. Tie an overhand knot on the back, and clip the thread. Carefully cut away the excess suede, leaving approximately 2mm of an edge for stitching, and set aside (8).
Repeat steps 6–10 to make five more Nanos the same way.
11. Gather all your Nanos and your cuff with the glass cabochon, and play with the placement of the Nanos. Curve the cuff around your wrist to see how they will appear when actually placed. Keep them closer to the front of the cuff, be-cause raised-up elements on a bracelet can be very uncomfortable if they are
at the back. Don’t concern yourself with spaces, as you will embroider and embellish all over them. When you’re happy with the placement, spread a layer of E-6000 on the back of each Nano and press it into the beading foundation in the desired spot. Allow to dry (9).
12. Single-thread your needle with 24" (61cm) of thread, and tie an overhand knot. Take the time to stitch down through the suede on the edges of the Nano components for strength. Then, take a good look at your arrangement, and pass the needle up through a space in or around the Nanos and cabochon. Begin stitching drops of
all sizes in between the spaces. Focus on the front of the cuff with the larger beads. Use your 4mm and 6mm beads as well (10).
13. Don’t forget to curve the cuff across your wrist to check for spaces. When you’re satisfied with the embellishing around the Nanos and focal cabochon, use O-Ring beads and 150 seed beads
to create stop stitches for the rest of the cuff on both sides. If the black beading foundation peeking through bothers you, you can overlap the O-Rings (11).
14. Pick up your clasp. Separate the two halves, and stitch one clasp half to each end of the cuff. Whipstitch the rings of the clasp to the backside of the cuff. Make sure the clasp is secure (12).
15. If you choose to do a lining (see the plastic bottle method, p. 16), do so at this time. Then, glue the beadwork to a piece of suede with white tacky glue. Keep the glue ⅛" (3mm) away from the edges. Wrap the cuff around a bottle and secure with a rubber band until dry. Cut away the excess suede flush against the beadwork.
When you reach the next corner, complete the picot edge with 150s and leftover drops (13). Alternate the drops for a colorful edging. Every seven or eight drops, add a mushroom button for variety. Repeat on the other side.
Tie off your thread in the beadwork, and clip the excess thread.
