Benign kidney tumor called an AML treated with liquid embolization, a mixture of a sterile glue and poppy seed oil.
𝗪𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐚𝐧 𝐀𝐌𝐋? A renal #angiomyolipoma “AML” is a benign tumor made of blood vessels, muscle cells and fat. Once they reach a certain size, they can burst causing life-threatening bleeding into the abdomen.
𝗪𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐨𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬? The gold standard treatment is non-surgical embolization, which cuts off its blood supply so that there is no risk of bleeding. This is performed by a board certified vascular and interventional radiologist.
𝗪𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐳𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧? This is a non-surgical treatment where a tiny IV sized catheter is advanced from the groin or wrist to the kidney. An embolic material is then injected blocking the blood flow to the tumor.
𝗪𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐤𝐬? If not careful with these embolic agents, they can block the normal kidney tissue or go down into the legs or other organs during injection.
