In 1980, the quiet Texas suburb of Wylie was shaken when a 30-year-old church-going housewife named Candy Montgomery brutally murdered her best friend Betty Gore with an ax.

The two women had reportedly fought when Gore learned that Montgomery was having an affair with her husband.
Though Montgomery later claimed in court that she killed Gore in self defense, an autopsy revealed that Montgomery had hit her friend 41 times — and many times after she’d already fallen unconscious.
