3 English verbs for different reading styles
Sometimes we just skim through, and sometimes we really dive in. These three verbs will help you describe how you read:
✔️ pore over — to read or examine something very carefully
🔵 He pored over the map, trying to find the fastest route.
🔸 She spent hours poring over old photographs in the attic.
✔️ peruse — to read something carefully and thoroughly (often formal)
🔸 Please peruse the contract before signing it.
🔵 The lawyer perused every page of the document.
✔️ flick through — to look quickly through a book, magazine, etc., without reading in detail
🔵 I flicked through the magazine while waiting for my coffee.
🔸 He flicked through the report but didn’t read it carefully.
