At 18, Eric is a gentle, solidly built young man originally from Cape Breton. He joins two of his housemates on comfy sofas in the upstairs common room of this large, two story building. Some walls are painted turquoise, and another section is a brilliant blue. The floors are hardwood and there’s a cheerful bouquet of flowers on a table at the top of the stairs and a piano (in tune, more or less!) in another corner. The female quarter, for those who self-identify as female, is just down the hall, and the rooms and bathroom for male identifying youth are around the corner. The House has a total of ten beds and two shared bathrooms.
Shawn, a slight, soft spoken 20 year old with a mop of dark hair speaks in careful, measured tones. He’s been involved with other Phoenix programs for two years and has lived at the House about a year.
Everyone at the House pitches in to help with kitchen chores. Leisha says, like all teenagers, some of the residents are better at it than others!
“I have the chance to take time here, pull myself together and get my life in order. I’m diabetic and haven’t had much control before, now I have that chance.”
Rounding out the young trio is Mackenzie, a tousled haired 16 year old dressed in pajama pants and wrapped up in a big warm woollen poncho. She sheepishly admits she slept through her alarm this morning and has missed school. She’s been at the house about 6 months.
“The best thing about this place is having a safe place to live while I work on my mental health,” she says. “To continue with my mental health treatment at the IWK I had to live somewhere. They require stable living.” The other two nod in agreement.
The young residents of Phoenix House arrive here by different routes. Some first connect with Phoenix at their drop in centre or the Phoenix Centre for Youth and are referred here. Some come via the Phoenix Youth Shelter on Tower Road, or the Phoenix Youth and Community Centre in Mulgrave Park, or are referred by Phoenix outreach workers or school guidance counsellors.
If they are accepted into Phoenix House, they’re expected to take part in 20 hours of outside programming each week. That could be going to school, having a part time job, or volunteering. And they have to do chores, like keeping their rooms clean, doing their laundry, helping with kitchen cleanups and taking out the trash. The stuff of life.
And, like kids everywhere, their back stories are different.
“It’s not like all of us left home to escape the fact that we were getting in trouble with our families,” Shawn explains. “Like me, I left home because I wanted to help rebuild my family’s dynamic. I think a lot of people tend to look at homeless youth as cut and paste subjects. The House here shows that we’re all different and we can all do better if we put enough effort into it and have people here to actually see our efforts and recognize them.”
Volunteers or the youth themselves prepare and cook the evening meals and everyone eats together, swapping stories about the kind of day it’s been.
One thing they all agree on, is that this House is a home.
“There was a youth here yesterday who was saying we’re more like brothers and sisters than just roommates, ” says Shawn. “I thought that was a really cool way of looking at it.”
Listening quietly to all this is Leisha Seymour. Leisha’s the Coordinator of Phoenix Supportive Housing Programs, and has a Masters in Counselling from Acadia. Today she’s on deck at the House. This evening, when things get really busy, two other Phoenix workers will come in, and one staff member will be on duty overnight. Other volunteers come and go, helping prepare supper for the residents, offering a yoga class, for example, or bringing in a pet therapy dog.
Leisha says youth generally stay at Phoenix House for eight to twelve months. But she says, the longer they stay, the better the outcome.
“One of the things that’s really important to me is taking a long term perspective. Youth living here are not typically in a long term active crisis situation. So the House gives us the ability to really meet them where they’re at, and stand by them. I think about it from an attachment kind of perspective. Hopefully, what we can do here at the House is to help youth build a healthy relationship with an adult, someone who’s going to stick with them. So there’s a careful, tenuous line there around meeting youth where they’re at, supporting them, sticking with them, and then also giving space for the reality of this House – which is that there are ten youth here and it’s really important that the whole dynamic of the House works.”
So how does the House handle any conflicts that must inevitably arise? Leisha’s response is nuanced. “We try to take a restorative approach to that. Rather than have firm rules and a predetermined idea of what fair would be or what justice would be, we try to work with the youth to see what works for them.”
I ask her what it would take to get kicked out of the House.
“Violence. We won’t tolerate any kind of violence.”
What about addictions, or substance abuse?
“It’s pretty contextual,” says Leisha. “It depends on how you are coping with that, and if you are having an effect on the other youth in the House – that’s a big one.”
Residents can’t use or keep drugs or alcohol on the property. That’s a firm rule.
Whatever anxiety the neighbours might have had have about have a place like Phoenix House on their street evaporated years ago. The House is spotless and secure and well maintained, and the staff and youth are proud of what they have created.

Leisha laughs when I ask her what a good day looks like at the House.
“Everyone’s gotten up, they’re out the door, they’re in a good mood, they’re ready to go to their program, they’re participating. Then they’re coming home and having a nice dinner together. These youth are just amazing. They’re teenagers, they have great sense of humour, they’re resilient, they‘re just great fun to hang out with. There is always someone doing something to make me laugh. That is lovely. And when you can help someone through something and see that they’ve been able to move forward in a way that’s really important to them, that’s rewarding.”
“I think a lot about maybe the stigma that comes along with living in a place like Phoenix House. But these people – they’re teenagers, just regular teenagers, in a lot of ways. They are funny and strong and capable and we want them have the opportunity to participate in, and be welcomed in the community.”
As for the three young people who made time to talk to me, they all have big dreams: MacKenzie wants to finish high school, go to Dal and work in child welfare. Oh, and live in Kenya. Why Kenya? “I don’t know, I’m just really interested in Kenya,” she replies with a big grin and a dreamy look in her eye.
Eric says he’d like to go to college. “I’ve graduated high school. There was a time in my life where I didn’t think I could even do that. I was sick, you know. Now I think I’d like to have a trade – welding, plumbing – one of those trades.”
“In all honesty, I was happy enough to have graduated high school. Now I want to work on getting my own apartment and kind of choosing between one of my three passions – singing, cooking or art. I don’t know which yet I want to follow. I’ll try to go to school for it when I figure that out. For now, getting a new job and my own place is my top priority. Farther down the road, maybe in 10 or 20 years, I’d like to have a family.”
For now, that family is Phoenix House.
