Let's practise together now!
When you prepare part 1 and part 3 IELTS speaking questions, we recommend you, first, to read the ideas and try to make your unique answers. Here we go. You will see the following list of phrases in the IDEAS section of your IELTS Speaking Assistant App:
✔I try to plug the name into what I’m saying (For example, if the man in front of me says his name is David, I say, ‘Hi, David, nice to meet you.’ Or I can ask a question with his name at the end, ‘How do you like this event, David?’)
✔I use the name throughout the conversation, but sparingly, and not in a repetitive way
✔I ask for a business card and glance at the person's name while I’m talking to them
✔after meeting someone, I put them into my contacts with a few pieces of information that will help me remember this person
✔I try to make a connection between the person I’m talking to, and someone else I know with the same name. But it works only if my new acquaintance looks somewhat like the person I know.
✔I repeat the name a few times
✔I use mnemonic devices, for example, find something distinctive about the person or their appearance, and relate it back to their name
✔I connect a new name with a visual image
✔I go back over names of new acquaintances at the end of the day
Then read our model answers if it was difficult to make your own answers using the ideas.
MODEL ANSWER: Well, whenever I get someone’s name, I don’t just nod and continue the conversation, I try to plug the name into what I’m saying. For example, if the man in front of me says his name is David, I say, ‘Hi, David, nice to meet you.’ Or I can ask a question with his name at the end, ‘How do you like this event, David?’ Then I use the name throughout the conversation, but sparingly, and not in a repetitive way. And, of course, after meeting someone, I put them into my contacts with a few pieces of information that will help me remember this person. I almost never connect a new name with a visual image or use any other mnemonic devices. I just try to be as focused as I can when people introduce themselves to me.
After you’ve read the answer several times, try to retell them and then record your answer. Listen to it. If you like it, move to the next question. If you don’t like it, practise answering this question until you like what you say.
