Dream Theater - International Fan Club Release 2002: Taste The Memories
“What better way to wrap up our 10th Anniversary extravaganza of DT’s groundbreaking Images And Words album than with a special live album from the same magical period a decade ago? Well, that’s the thought we all had when the various fan clubs began to discuss the content for this year’s annual CD.
Many of the regional fan clubs had already published retrospective features in their summer 2002 fanzines, such as looking back at the 10yrs since Images And Wordswas recorded. In addition, several of the regional fan clubs participated in The Atco Demos project - a free CD with the original demos of Metropolis Pt.1, To Live Forever, and Take The Time, which the band recorded in May 1991. In order to obtain a record deal with the then Atco label. So for us it was more or less a logical move to dedicate as well this year’s annual CD to that album that, 10yrs ago, changed our lives forever!
We obviously decided to pick out songs from Images And Words that were never released before on any Dream Theater official live CD, but we had to stay within the scope of a single CD. However, we included 2 songs from the debut album, When Dream And Day Unite, because they were part of the core set-lists of the 1992 and 1993 tours, and they got a 2nd life when sung by James LaBrie. As for the sound, the audio source had to be the best possible. We were in the possession of 2 excellent rough soundboard recordings from the 2 major Images And Words support tours: Images And Tour in 1992, and Music In Progress from 1993. What’s more, thanks to the many Japanese bootlegs from that period, wwe had the audience recordings from those shows: Moon Bubbles (one of the rarest DT bootlegs) and Mission: Impossible. We mixed these recordings along with the soundboard sources and enhanced the sound during mastering in order to bring you the best possible material.
The performances from those shows are amazing. The 1992 show is from the Imperial Hall in Osaka on November 19th, the 1993 show is also from Osaka at the Festival Hall on August 28th. Both shows were the last of each of the respective Japanese tours and were the absolute highlights of these legs. This is a testimony of how DT sounded a decade ago in a live environment, and it’s a showcase of what DT live trademarks; revisited tracks, jams, solos, and covers.
Finally as a bonus, we included a live version of the great classic A Change Of Seasons, as composed and played with Kevin Moore. This track should have been on the Images And Words album, but Atco decided differently because of its length. DT performed this track only twice (with James LaBrie) until its studio release a few years later on the eponymous official EP. This original live version comes from the audience bootleg The Dance Of Eternity, recorded in NY, at the Limelight on March 4th, 1993.
We hope you enjoy the walk down memory lane.”
