Students and faculty of the Kabardino-Balkarian State University named after Kh.M. Berbekov, as part of the "Shagdi" folk dance ensemble, successfully performed at the "Golden Square" International Festival of Traditional Cultures in China.
The ensemble won the "First of the Best" award and first-degree diplomas in five categories. The festival took place from September 8 to 15 in Qinhuangdao.
The ensemble presented a program including three dances and an ethnic evening, "Two Peoples—Two Wings." The performances, dedicated to the friendship between the Kabardian and Balkar peoples, were highly praised by the jury and warmly received by the audience.
Zarema Unazhokova, director of the Shagdi ensemble and Honored Cultural Worker of the Kabardino-Balkarian Republic, shared:
"We received an invitation from the festival president, who had seen our ensemble perform on numerous occasions. We had only a month and a half to prepare for the competition, as the ensemble had just returned from a trip to Jordan."
The ensemble's choreographer also shared her impressions:
"The trip program was packed. On the opening day, we took part in a colorful procession along the main street of the resort town of Beidaihe. We performed a beautiful dance as part of the opening day concert. The audience warmly welcomed our young artists, with thunderous applause accompanying each dance. After the performance, members of the jury, representatives of other ensembles, and audience members approached us and expressed their admiration for the beauty of the dances, the vibrant costumes, and the spectacular performance. We are very pleased with the trip, the results, and the time we spent in China."
The Traditional Culture Festival is an annual event held in China to support folk art, promote the cultural heritage of the world's peoples, expand cultural cooperation between China and Russia, and strengthen interethnic relations. This year, in addition to the Shagdi ensemble (the only group from the North Caucasus), the festival featured delegations from 30 Russian regions—a total of approximately 2,000 participants—presenting over 70 concert programs.
