THE ANNIHILATION OF FISH (USA, 1999)
“The Annihilation of Fish” is a 1999 American romantic comedy film directed by Charles Burnett and starring James Earl Jones & Lynn Redgrave.
Poinsettia is an old housewife, who lives alone and surrounded by dreams of unrequited love, which can only be realized by her imaginary lover: the 19th century composer Giacomo Puccini. Disgusted with a world that ridicules this love and her plans to marry Puccini, she moves to Los Angeles in search of a new scenario. By renting a room at the boarding house of the feisty Mrs. Muldroone, Poinsettia finds another newcomer: Fish, an elderly expatriate from Jamaica who has spent much of his adult life in a New York mental institution. One of the clearest manifestations of this Jamaican's madness is Hank, an imaginary enemy whom Fish must regularly hit in order to be obeyed. Despite both considering the other as a lunatic, Poinsettia and Fish go through all the inconveniences imaginable and move decisively towards love, to finally be able to participate fully in each other's world, indifferent to the possibility of being led to new and higher levels of hallucination.
