23-year-old Nikhil, an Indian immigrant, is convinced by his uncle to work as a companion and care-giver to Sam, an elderly Jewish man, fed up with his life. As an unlikely friendship ensues, both men get new insight into life.
Nikhil Parikh (Ranjit Chowdhry) is a young man living in India, but he's not interested in the life his mom's planned for him.
So he takes a trip to Toronto, where he eventually becomes a caregiver for Sam Cohen - an elderly Jewish man.
And after a rocky start, an unlikely friendship takes shape between the two.
Nikhil even starts to call Sam 'Zayda,' or father.
But while their friendship grows, the relatives of both men become concerned and unnerved with the bond that has developed between Sam and Nikhil, and decide to intervene.
Sam & Me is a 1991 Canadian film directed by Indo-Canadian filmmaker Deepa Mehta.
It was her debut movie as a director and went on to win an honourable mention at the Cannes Film Festival.
