Matriarch Amanda (Gertrude Lawrence) is a former Southern belle determined to find a suitor for her sickly and shy daughter, Laura (Jane Wyman). When Laura's brother, the daydreaming Tom (Arthur Kennedy), invites his co-worker Jim (Kirk Douglas) over to dinner, Amanda is thrilled to entertain an eligible bachelor, but the evening doesn't quite go as planned.
