S1, Ep 4: The White Bird of Laughter. High above Dartmoor, a solitary bird is on an endless journey. This bird of legend flies on and on and on across an eternity of summer skies, further and further from evil with no destination and no purpose but this, the celebration of its final freedom. Against the backdrop of this legend, a young man is sent by his father to stay at a friend's home to toughen him up. His stay there is not happy, but he enjoys escape from mundane servitude by riding across the moors. One day he falls and injures himself and finds himself being comforted by a young woman, but when he is found by a rescue party she has disappeared. With the mysterious girl still in his mind he decides to try and find her, little realizing the tragedy that is to unfold...
As mentioned, I saved most of this series from Mick's Nostalgia Channel to watch before it disappeared, but he did not have all of the episodes. This was one I was fortunate enough to find elsewhere and is a seemingly straightforward tale featuring Adrian Van Den Bok, Gillian Miles, Peewee Hunt (yes, really!), Cyril Epstein and June Bishop among the cast. But as with most of these tales, there is a twist within that is more poignant than sinister. It's narrated by Jack Watson and please note that while picture quality may not be perfect, this is because this series is rarely repeated nowadays - those episodes that are available, that is.
