👑👑𝘾𝙡𝙖𝙨𝙨𝙞𝙘 * 𝙍𝙤𝙮𝙖𝙡 * 𝙉𝙖𝙫𝙮 - 𝘼𝙞𝙧 𝙁𝙤𝙧𝙘𝙚 * 𝘼𝙘𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 * 𝙒𝙖𝙧 * 𝙈𝙤𝙫𝙞𝙚𝙨👑👑 I am putting together a series of (5) of my favorite British war movies dealing with World War II. These 5 movies were released between 1953 to 1969. The first four movies mainly deal with the Royal Navy and the last movie is about the Royal Air Force. Three of the movies deal with actual events that happened during World War II. One movie is based upon the battle of the Atlantic in which so many men from all nations gave their lives. The (5) movies in this series are the; The Cruel Sea 1953, Sailor Of The King 1953, The Battle Of The River Plate 1956, Sink The Bismarck! 1960 and The Battle Of Britain 1969. The last 3 movies deals with actual events of WW 2 with some liberties taken by the studios. For the most part all 5 of these movies are a 10 to me out of 10.
In the first major naval battle of World War II, the British Navy must find and destroy a powerful German warship. n the fall of 1939, the German heavy cruiser (referred to as a pocket battleship) Graf Spee seems to have command of the Atlantic. In the first three months of World War II, she was responsible for sinking nine ships. The British sent three cruisers commanded by Commodore Henry Harwood to confront her. The battle took place on December 13, 1939 and the British came out on top. The Graf Spee headed for the neutral harbor of Montevideo, Uruguay. They were given only a short time to effect repairs and the British did their best to make them believe a British fleet of six or eight ships awaited them. Rather than chance the loss of his men, the German Captain ordered the Graf Spee scuttled.
Movie Trivia
The U.S.S. Salem (As The Graf Spee) was a World War II vintage Des Moines class heavy cruiser, armed with nine eight-inch guns. In this movie, we can also see the three-inch AA guns installed to combat Kamikaze attacks.
The U.S. Navy refused to allow the German ensign swastika to be flown from the U.S.S. Salem. When ever a shot of this ensign is shown it is from the ground up and was flying from one of the Royal navy warships.
Towards the end of the movie when you see the U.S.S. Salem (As The Graf Spee) slowly moving out of the Montevideo harbor look closely at the port side aft end of the cruiser. You will see cars & trucks near the aft 8 inch gun turret. The movie was filmed in the Mediterranean rather than in the South Atlantic in (Montevideo, Uruguay). All of the ships used at the time were on station in the Med. The U.S.S. Salem was likely being rotated back the the USA and had "Civilian" vehicles onboard for the trip home.
If you have watched this movie, what would your rating be on a scale of 1 to 10? My reviews will be based upon other reviews ratings from 1 to 10. With 1 being the lowest and 10 being the best. This movie has a rating of NONE out of 10. I am giving no rating in this series of 5 movies because of my own bias towards these movies. To me these 5 movies are some of the best war/military movies on events from World War II.
