Ford Motor Company has just unveiled two electric prototype bicycles in Barcelona, Spain at the Mobile World Congress. Both e-bikes have a 200-watt motor in addition to a 9-amp-hour battery providing riders with electric pedal assist.
They are equipped with a rear-facing ultrasonic sensor that works with a so-called rider alert system.
In a press release, Ford explains the system "both warns the cyclist when a vehicle is overtaking, by vibrating both handlebars, and alerts motorists of the presence of the e-bike by illuminating handlebar lights."
The bikes were designed with not only safety in mind, but practicality as well. Both fold and stow very easily.
There are some differences between the two though, including their appearances. One was created for urban commuters in mind, as it’s made to move through traffic jams and be carried onto public transport.
The other is more suited for commercial use and was designed to fit into vehicles typically used by those in delivery service jobs. The bikes were developed for the company's Handle on Mobility experiment which is part of the Ford Smart Mobility plan.
