Episode 4: Christabel Pankhurst. In 1910 composer Ethel Smyth joins the W.S.P.U., writing its anthem The March of the Women as the campaign gathers pace. There is hope that their campaign may finally bear fruit as Parliament debates the Conciliation Bill, which would grant limited rights for women. When the bill is rejected by MPs, Emmeline Pankhurst and her daughter Christabel rally the movement to orchestrate a more aggressive campaign of window smashing and sabotage, horrifying the more moderate Sylvia and Mr and Mrs Pethick-Lawrence and risking splitting the group permanently in a power battle.
Starring Sian Phillips, Patricia Quinn, Angela Down, Sheila Allen, Ronald Hines, Georgia Brown, Robert Hardy, Fulton Mackay, Sally Miles, Natasha Morgan, Maureen Morris, Maureen Pryor, Claire Davenport, Joy Turpin and Marguerite Young. This is from a recording of mine of when the series was recently repeated on BBC4, so any glitches are due to the age of the programme and nothing to do with me. It's not available anywhere else, which is why I decided to upload it, but what I like about this series is that it doesn't sugar coat some of the actions or people in this. And out of the Pankhursts, it's Sylvia who comes out best in this.
