A CLASSICAL CASABLANCA IN REVERSE: αn excellent type of American film-noir & a perfect blueprint of psychological drama, based on the theatrical play MONSIEUR LAMBERTHIER, written in 1926-7 by the French actor, palywright and screenwriter Louis Verneuil (whose real name was Louis Jacques Marie Collin du Bocage). He commited suicide in Paris in 1952. The play was performed at Broadway in 1926-9 (and in 1946, under the title OBSESSION). The play was converted to a movie at first in 1929 under the title JEALOUSY (starring Fredric March) and was adapted for a second time -under the title DECEPTION- by the British fiction writer, novelist and screen writer John Henry Noyes Collier and the Austrian-Moravian, anti-Nazi screenwriter Joseph Than (Josef or Pepi Than, of Jewish descent, he became an American citizen in 1946). The movie was directed by the British-American actor and director Irving Rapper (of Jewish descent, he also directed Henreid and Davis in NOW, VOYAGER). It was produced by the German writer, manager, director and producer Henry (Heinz) Blanke and it was filmed at Warner Bros' Studios in Burbank, California (USA). Music by the Austrian-Moravian composer, conductor and pianist Erich Wolfgang Korngold who also composed Hollenious' CELLO CONCERTO and dubbed Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 23 ''APPASSIONATA" in the film(Korngold became an Ameircan citizen in 1943). Paul Henreid's cello playing was dubbed by the cellist Eleanor Altschuler-Aller-Slatkin (of Russian and Jewish descent) whose father, Gregory, coached Henreid in bow movements. MONSIEUR LAMBERTHIER has met several stage performances and film remakes (in 1957, 1963, 1964 and 1976). THE GREAT STAR of the film is PAUL HENREID, the double (or doppelganger) of the philosopher Albert Camus.
