THE ORIGINAL AMALGAMATED VERSION OF ''SCARFACE'' & "CARLITO'S WAY": an existential film-noir evolving towards the psychological thriller, being based on the novel HOLLOW TRIUMPH (1946), the only novel written by Murray Forbes.
Forbes was a former book-keeper who became a veteran and radio personality of the Chicago scene that dominated broadcasting in the 1930s, the Radio's Golden Age.
The novel was adapted for the wide screen by the Jewish-American novelist, fiction writer, essayist and teacher Daniel Fuchs.
THE GREAT STAR OF THE FILM is Paul Henreid (the double or ''doppelganger'' of Albert Camus). This story is stunningly revealing about the connection between Henreid and Camus, it actually PROVES as true the whole metaphysical philosophy of Camus.
The film was also financed and produced by Paul Henreid who, at a certain point, even took over the main direction from Székely, as well. Bryan Foy was the executive producer.
Officialy, directed by the Hungarian director István Székely (Stefan or Steve Sekely) who had worked as a journalist and had also made wonderful films in Hungary, Austria and Germany before he left Europe -because of the Nazi expansion- and lived in the US from 1938 until 1951: later, he made an international career.
The movie was filmed entirely at the Universal Studios (Universal City), Long Beach and Los Angeles in California (USA).
Cinematography by John Alton.
