An excellent Anti-Nazi movie and a great historical document, based on the political novel written in 1939 by the American novelist Ethel Vance (Grace Z. Stone) under the title ESCAPE/Die Flucht, having as a theme the concentrations camps even in the period of pre-World War II, Nazi Germany.
This film was the 1st of a number of anti-Nazi movies forbidden by Hitler, something which ultimately led to the banning of all MGM pictures in Germany.
Grace Zaring Stone was the great-great-granddaughter of the liberal, Utopian and socialist-industrialist reformer Robert Owen. Her husband, Ellis Spencer Stone was a commodore in the U.S. Navy, where he commanded all of the aircraft carriers which escaped the Pearl Harbor attack in 1941 !!!
The novel ESCAPE was adapted for the wide screen by the multi-talented, prolific writer Arch Oboler (and Marguerite Roberts).
Produced by Mervyn LeRoy (and Lawrence Weingarten), filmed in California with the participation of many German actors and actresses and directed by Mervyn LeRoy.
Grace Z. Stone died in 1991 (Mystic, USA) at her 100th year.
