Pink Floyd were an English rock band formed in London. They achieved international acclaim with their progressive and psychedelic music. Distinguished by their use of philosophical lyrics, sonic experimentation, extended compositions and elaborate live shows, they are one of the most commercially successful and influential groups in the history of popular music.
Pink Floyd were founded in 1965 by students Syd Barrett on guitar and lead vocals, Nick Mason on drums, Roger Waters on bass and vocals, and Richard Wright on keyboards and vocals. They gained popularity performing in London's underground music scene during the late 1960s.Guitarist David Gilmour joined in December 1967; Barrett left in April 1968 due to deteriorating mental health. Waters became the band's primary lyricist and eventually their dominant songwriter. Pink Floyd were inducted into the American Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996, and the UK Music Hall of Fame in 2005. By 2013, the band had sold more than 250 million records worldwide, including 75 million certified units in the United States.
"Wish You Were Here" is their ninth studio album and released on 12 September 1975.
"Wish you were here" is one the most important songs in the history. Maybe is this simple and really accessible combination of melody and lyrics that often introduce to the work of one of the most complex music band. The progressive side of a great band like Pink Floyd can be sometime hard to understand and can scare a lot of people. But the easiness of Wish you were here, and the way in which almost everybody can relate with this softly wording, is a great way to start a big journey inside the world of a big piece of history like the music of the Pink Floyd. The song is dedicated to Syd Barret, and was based on a poem that Roger Waters wrote about Syd Barrett’s fall from reality. It was said that Syd’s friends would lace his coffee with LSD, which eventually lead to his mental breakdown.
Lyrics:
So.. so you think you can tell
Heaven from Hell
Blue skies from pain
Can you tell a green field
From a cold steel rail ?
A smile from a veil ?
Do you think you can tell ?
Did they get you to trade ?
Your heroes for ghosts ?
Hot ashes for trees ?
Hot air for a cool breeze ?
Cold comfort for change ?
And did you exchange
A walk on part in the war
For a lead role in a cage ?
How I wish, how I wish you were here!
We're just two lost souls
Swimming in a fish bowl
Year after year
Running over the same old ground
What have we found ?
The same old fears
Wish you were here...
