A small quiet Irish village, and a pretty young woman, fall under the spell of a charming, slightly roguish stranger who appears suddenly one day. The action takes place in the early 1900's in a rural pub along the Atlantic coast in County Mayo, Ireland. In early twentieth-century Ireland, the term "playboy" did not have the meaning it has today. Rather, it meant hoaxer or trickster. A seemingly lost jewel, the rarely seen film version of the rollicking and lyrical J. M. Synge play is a feast for the eyes and ears. Directed and adapted by Irish filmmaker Brian Desmond Hurst and played to perfection by Siobhan McKenna, Gary Raymond as Christy, Liam Redmond and Niall MacGinnis as their respective Das, and the cream of the Abbey Theater Players.
