A superb film version of George Bernard Shaw's most popular play, for which Shaw himself was awarded a special Academy Award for his contribution (the embassy ball scene) to the screenplay. The film actually won Oscars for the adaptors of the screenplay. Leslie Howard was never better as Henry Higgins (a role Shaw wanted to go to Charles Laughton), and both he and Wendy Hiller (quite brilliant as Eliza Doolittle) were unlucky not to win Oscars themselves. Although Howard took a co-directing credit, Anthony Asquith handled most of the action, acquiring himself an unrivalled reputation for stage adaptation in the process. Infinitely superior to its musical incarnation, My Fair Lady.
