Young British actress Gertrude Lawrence (Julie Andrews) secures a place in a 1920s production penned by soon-to-be legendary playwright Noel Coward. After its opening in England, "London Calling!" moves to New York, and the coveted Lawrence is suddenly a big star and a muse for the era's best-known producers. Though Lawrence's mercurial behavior often makes her tough to handle, her career thrives into the 1940s under the guidance of producer husband Richard Aldrich (Richard Crenna).
