Shining Through (1992)

A romantic thriller set during WW2 about a American-Jewish woman (Melanie Griffiths) who becomes a language translator to a law firm, only to discover that her boss (Michael Douglas) is involved in Secret Intelligence. Falling in love with him, she later hears of a plan to infiltrate a high ranking Nazi, and having Jewish cousins hiding out in Germany she volunteers for the job in order to find them... This is from my own video recording from 2001 from Channel 5 (minus adverts), and as such there seems to be 10 minutes missing from the film - not that it really tells. The film itself is termed "romantic thriller", but should be viewed with a great suspension of belief, and possibly as a unintentional comedy. The film at least has some big names, and as well as Griffiths and Douglas include Liam Neeson, Joely Richardson, John Gielgud, Sylvia Syms, Sheila Allen, plus Anthony Walters and Victoria Shalet (Tiny Tim from A Christmas Carol (1984) & Harmony from The Queen's Nose, respectively) as Neeson's children that Melanie Griffiths ends up nannying out in Germany. Also keep your eye out for Juliet Aubrey making her acting debut at 30 mins or so dancing with Michael Douglas. Please note that as this is an old recording the picture quality may vary at times. Also, this seems to of been recorded in Mono sound, and although the sound is okay, there are times when Joely Richardson sounds like a Clanger. This may add to your enjoyment of the film, which if credibility is abandoned can be enjoyed as a piece of escapism. Also note as a warning, this contains some swearing and violence.
