JIM THORPE, MAN OF BRONZE (1951, ENG SUB) with BURT LANCASTER & Charles Bickford
JIM THORPE, ALL-AMERICAN or MAN OF BRONZE: a rare, sports movie based on the autobiography of the native Indian American James Francis Thorpe (Jacobus Franciscus or Jim Thorpe) born in 1887 at the Indian Territory -Oklahoma- who became the Olympian winner of 1912 at Stockholm, Sweden: a gold metallist in the classic pentathlon (long jump, javelin throw, 200-meter dash, discus throw and 1500-meter run) and the dekathlon, as well, where he succeeded to collect a total of points that constituted a new Olympic record (he won 8 from the 15 individual events). He was the first Native American who won a gold metal -actually, 2- for the USA in the Olympic Games. He excelled in high jump, he won a ballroom dancing championship and he also played American football, basketball and baseball (which was the pretext for taking away from him his Olympic titles until 30 years after his death when the International Olympic Committee restored to him the Olympian titles although, in the meanwhile, his original medals had been stolen from the museums where these were kept). He was married 3 times and he had 8 children (5 boys, 3 girls), appeared in several Hollywood movies -especially, Westerns- while he was working as a coach but he became a chronic alcoholic and eventually died in 1953 in California. He is still considered 1 of the 3 greatest athetes of the world. A town in Pennsylvania -where he lived- has taken his name. The film is known to Greece under the title BODIES OF BRONZE. Jim Thorpe also appears to the screen in this film which is directed by Michael Curtiz & produced by Ever. Freeman.
