As part of Boston Ukrainian Independence Day Festival, group Arts Against Aggression built a balloon installation in the shape of a giant spider. Spider's head bore a likeness of Russian President's Putin's face. Recent actions by Russian Federation that include sustained campaign of anti-Ukrainian propaganda in mass media, as well as sending dangerous weapons and manpower to their proxies in Eastern Ukraine, remind us of a spider attempting to suffocate its prey. Tourists and festival goers, many of whom joined the celebration after attending the flag raising ceremony in front of Boston City Hall, took pictures of themselves menacing the giant spider or posing with Ukrainian flags.
The sculpture symbolized Putin's regime, in that though it looked scary and overwhelming, is was full of nothing but air. The right to pop spider's head was ruffled off, with a young festival volunteer winning the honor. Working together, festival attendees dispatched with the rest of the spider in no time, demonstrating that regime built on lies and fear can collapse rather quickly.
It is painfully clear that Ukraine can only be truly independent when Russia abandons its imperial ambitions. As the international community comes together to celebrate Ukrainian Independence Day, we hope that it will also come together to unequivocally demand that Mr. Putin take his hands off Ukraine.
Funds raised at the Festival are being used to purchase Improved First Aid Kits for the defenders of Ukraine. One of the ways that money was raised at the Festival was by selling t-shirts. The t-shirt booth appears in the video between
0:12 and
0:19. If you would like to purchase a Festival t-shirt, please go to
