Life on the ward of an English NHS TB sanatorium, where one measure of health is to take a walk around the flowerbed in the gardens. The assorted TB patients include a tough Welsh miner (Donald Houston) who refuses to believe he is really ill, a sensitive orphan who writes poetry (Andrew Ray), a chap who fancies himself a ladies’ man (Donald Sinden), a chess player (Kenneth Williams) and a quiet man (Ronald Lewis) whose girlfriend is growing distant.
Produced and directed by the producers of the Carry On series, this comedy tinged with drama is much more subdued than your average Carry On farce, with some serious and semi-serious moments squeezed between the double entendres (as I watched, I wondered how they managed to slip more than a few lines past the British Censor Board). Juliet Mills is first billed, but in truth, has less screen time than some the supporting cast.
