A new army regulation makes it possible for all ranks to apply for admission to West Point, not just officers. However, Lt. Hagan doesn't agree with that at all, and intentionally makes it extremely difficult for the enlisted men to take advantage of it.
One young soldier, tired of his comrades' mockery of his hopeless courtship of a Colonel's daughter, requests a transfer from a kindly Captain, who succeeds in convincing him to apply to West Point, as authorized by a new directive from the President of the United States. His immediate superior opposes this and requests a court-martial for the young soldier, for assaulting him during a reconnaissance mission while his officer was preparing to kill an Indian scout he had mistaken for an Apache foe.
