Malice образовались в Портленде, штат Орегон, в начале 80-х, когда бывший гитарист The Ravers Джей Рейнольдс собрал зародышевый состав, состоящий из вокалиста Джеймса Нила, будущего дуэта Wild Dogs , Мэтта Маккорта на басу, Дина Кастроново на барабанах и Кипа Дорана на гитаре. Затем Рейнольдс решил перебраться в Лос-Анджелес , вскоре к нему присоединился другой гитарист Мик Зейн, чтобы создать полностью оригинальную металлическую группу. Когда дуэт не смог найти подходящих игроков для своего нового предприятия, они убедили Нила, басиста Марка Бена и барабанщика Пита Лауфмана уехать из Портленда после того, как первоначальное демо Malice вызвало переполох и привлекло внимание лейблов Брайана Слагеля из Metal Blade.
